Double Commits!

Well, this is really surprising. There might not be any room left for Ron Thompson in this class?

Today, both TE Devin Funchess and TE A.J Williams have committed to Michigan; giving Michigan their 5th and 6th commits for the 2012 recruiting class.

Funchess wasn't supposed to be an early announcement, so this is a pleasant surprise, especially since he's the #6 TE in the country according to scout.com. Loving this tweet too:

TomVH: "Devin Funchess also told me that he will try to recruit his teammate DE Mario Ojemudia to Michigan"

This tells us two things, #1, Michigan has a really good shot with Ojemudia now, and #2, Michigan probably doesn't have a shot with Aaron Burbridge! (Their other teammate who favors MSU).

As for Williams, it appears like Funchess committed first, and Williams decided he might as well pull the trigger too. Williams is a three star prospect with an impressive offer list; he visited UM last month with his Dad and both of them really bonded with the UM coaches.

The TE position figures to be a key part in Michigan's offense under Al Borges, but they don't have a great deal of talent on the roster right now. These two commits will give UM much needed depth after Koger departs this season. The question now remains, will they take Ron Thompson, arguably the most talented TE of the three? Does it depend on further attrition?

Commitment posts to follow later.

  1. I think it will come to the point we have too many recruits and will have to tell some people no.. We have over 120 offers out and are in very good standings with a couple elite guys ...16 scholarships plus whoever leaves word is Cullen Christian is gone so that opens 1 and we already have 6 commits

  2. With Cullen Christian and D.J Williamson leaving, we have 18 scholarships for the 2012 class. At least 8 will go to O and D lineman. Leaving 10 spots for everywhere else, of which we've already taken four with 2 LBs and 2 TEs!

Some recruits will definitely be turned away.

  3. Devin told Sam Webb the coaches told him he'll play WR/TE, so he may not be stealing a TE spot from Ron.

  4. Recruits are excited about what Hoke is doing and they need to commit before the spots are gone! Cause your right, we are gonna turn alot down!

  5. I agree we may take all three, especially if any of them have the potential to bulk up and they are good blockers they might develop into an OT. And if they are gifted enough receiving, well we'll need help there too.

  6. John, I guess it depends on how much weight Funchess puts on between now and college. Most sites list him as only 205lbs right now, which is obviously way too low for TE. But yet everyone lists him as a TE, so I guess he's expected to put on at least 30-40lbs.

  7. Yea I just looked for his 40 time and it says he runs a 4.69 definitely not a WR will definitely have to gain weight

  8. There may be room yet for Ron Thompson considering Funchess is a combo player who can be a Fullback, a Splitback, or a Receiver and Williams is a 260lb End. He could play the primary blocking role in the Power Run offense or could even move to OL with 20-30 more pounds in the next 2 years. Ron Thom is more of a dedicated TE while these others could classify as WR/RB/OL commits. Braylon Edwards was a TE sized WR and it worked well against 5-11 190lb CB's.

  9. Don't know what Ron's issue is, is he waiting for the red carpet or what ? if he commits fine, if not, we move on. Definitely a Good Friday !

  10. Wondering about Ron Thompson and James Ross. We already have 2 at each position they play and they seem like Michigan leans. Was one of them the silent commit? Wondering if Brady Hokes summer tour visiting football alumni isn't really a recruiting trip with so many kids committing before their senior years and us with few remaining scholarships and Hoke wanting "his" players plugged in asap.

  11. Benji, Do you think it is possible Michigan may be out of scholarships by the end of summer? And with some many kids getting offer will that speed up the higher star time lines.

  12. Neither Ross or Thompson is the silent commit.

I think UM will have around 10 commits by the time the season starts.

  20. The silent commit will openly commit before the end of spring (May).

I've spoken to a few people, and they seem to think Michigan will still take Ron Thompson.
