Anthony Standifer Update

Cornerback Anthony Standifer will visit Michigan on Wednesday, according to a story from 247Sports. This could potentially result in another commitment.

Nowadays recruits actively follow the recruiting classes of schools they are interested in. Standifer will know full well that UM has 2 DB commits, and he'll probably also know that UM is the favorite to land Wayne Morgan on Thursday. This could very well lead to Standifer committing early, even with all the new offers he's received lately.

His parents are also apparently coming with him on the visit, and that's always a positive, especially at a University as academically strong as Michigan.

UPDATE: A poster in the comments section below has informed me that Standifer will be visiting Notre Dame on Thursday, which suggests a commitment probably won't happen on his Michigan trip.

  1. Based on what I've read, you can pretty much count on Magnuson as a commit.
Kyle Kalis called up osu's new interim coach Fickell to tell him he was decommitting in the wake of the Tressel scandal. Fickell managed to talk him out of it for the time being, but Kalis said if Fickell isn't the permanent coach come this fall, he's going elsewhere.

  2. We have got to start holding out for big recruits. With our class filling up, our less prestigious offers are starting to commit..... I have never seen anything like this. I am sure that we could take nothing but 4+ star recruits to fill this class:
    Morgan
    Diamond
    Magnuson
    Wormley
    Burbridge
    Day
    are probably locks

Then I think we're in good shape for:
    Kalis
    Washington
    Reeves
    Stanford

and then all the other question marks:
    Dunn
    Banner
    Garnett
    Simmons
    Boehm
    Strobel
    Pipkins

Everyone of these guys is a 4*

    Time to pick and choose!!!

  3. The good news is the kids we've got really want to be here. Some kids may look better or worse but the ones that really want Michigan can be special.I think the coaches might not have expected the kind of success they're currently having, I expect for next year they do offer fewer kids.

    ReplyDelete
  4. if a kid has a scholarship offer from us and we already have that position locked up or have a better prospect about to commit can we tell them no?

    ReplyDelete
  5. No problem if the position is locked up. We can always so no but generally it goes first come, first served. That's why these lesser offers are jumping in there now and committing.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Know this is off the subject, but it was revealed today that Terrell Pryor has been driving on a suspended license!!! Could the month of May have been any better?

  7. Standifer is also set to visit Notre Dame on Thursday.

  8. We're not in a good position for Kalis, I don't see him leaving OSU's class, and Sheldon Day isn't a lock because if he plans a fall decision, he might be too late. Maybe swap Pipkins and Day around :)

Rob, as soon as a position fills up, Michigan will contact all the players with an offer for that position and tell them they are full, like they would have done for the offers to Linebackers earlier this spring.

GoBlueNorth, thanks for the Standifer tip, if that's true then I guess it's unlikely he'll commit on today unless he's blown away.

  9. GoBlueNorth, your stargazing is clouding your vision.

Standifer has an offer from Notre Dame; he is no slouch. If the staff offered Standifer (and they offered him relatively recently, not back before all the 4-star players committed) that means they want him on the team.

Hoke, like Beilein, is trying to compose this team of kids who are "breaking down the doors to come to Michigan." If you cherry pick only the top prospects, you're going to get a team full of prima-donna's and end up with an Ohio State or USC-like type of problem. If Standifer has an offer from both Meech and ND, you know he's legit. Also: ND decided to offer him right after Michigan did, so that should be an indication to you that Standifer is an under-the-radar type that we got in on early.

Don't be fooled by a Rivals or a Scout ranking; trust your coaching staff and welcome the kid when he decides to go blue.

  10. Hey Benji, maybe Standifer will skip his trip to Notre Dame if the visit to UofM goes well. He could commit on this visit and be done with everyone else. GO BLUE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I have forgotten the criteria of the silent commit but could it be Standifer? He might be "visiting" ND, but parents are coming with him on his visit today sounds like it could have potential. Maybe Im just dreaming though.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The silent commit is a O lineman.....

    ReplyDelete
  13. Saw a old article by Tom Lemming that had Anthony Standifer rated the # 98 prospect in the country it was released like 2 weeks ago

  14. I was wondering what had happened to Jordan Simmons. Haven't heard anything in quite a while from him. Apparently it was a Michigan v. buckeye race for him and his trainer is former UM guard Courtney Morgan. I wonder what his timetable is?

  15. Greg,

You've got me all wrong here. I happen to like Stanifer's tape. I just happen to like Reeves' a little more. My hope for DB was #1 Richardson, #2 Reeves, #3 Standifer, #4 Morgan and #5 Gant. With Coaches likely only taking 4 DBs I think we will likely lose Reeves, with Morgan probably committing tomorrow.

I personally think that this is a great position to be in. I think that the coaches love that they can be this selective and they should. 25 guys that bleed Blue alone won't put us on top of the BIG......we need the great talent for that. Somebody on here yesterday said that the coaches will likely be a little tighter with the offers next year and I believe that to be true.

I have nothing but trust for Hoke which is why I believe he wants to find the best ball players he can.....not Prima Donnas but great ball players, great students, great kids.

As for welcoming these kids.... I welcome every kid that wants to be a Wolverine. There isn't a Saturday that goes by where I'm not standing at the game when each of these kids including our three deep touch the banner.

    Cheers

    Phil

  16. I don't think it was as simple as UM vs OSU for Simmons. He's a big time prospect from California, which means USC, Cal and UCLA will be desperate to keep him in state. Whilst he does have the Michigan connection through his mentor, it still going to be really tough to get him in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think Simmons continues to be a west coast. I think we still look great as far as OL recruiting goes. As for our silent OL commit. At first I thought it was Diamond (he's from the midwest so he can't be), then I thought maybe Boehm....also from the midwest, then I thought Magnuson but I believe that he likes UofM but is not committed yet. I therefore believe that only Benji knows. Are we still talking the silent commit who is an OL and not from the midwest??

    ReplyDelete
  18. I was reading a link on a Scout recruit analyst interview who was saying he expected him to go to Michigan. Not just because of the connection, but him leaning away from the west coast. It was up for a day but now they pulled it. It didn't give anything away, it was just an insider opinion from hearing him favor a move. I agree it's more complicated than just Michigan v. Ohio, though.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Michael,

I would love it if it's the case. This kid is a beast. I think our OL recruits are going to look pretty good no matter who we get. Our list of interested prospects is pretty impressive.

  20. I can see it happening, but your right, things are very exciting regardless. I love these kids beating down the door to get in. I think Simmons is one of those few kids Hoke favored from early on, he's still got his SDSU offer.

  21. Tom's saying Morgan may not announce tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have 2 things to say if I may.
1 I feel ESPN does not like Michigan because they can not stop talking about Michigan record againist OSU. I am tried of it.
2 Does it amamze anybody else that OSU own fans a piling on there own. They can't stop trowing people under the bus. All they can say is its his fault no its his fault. The truth is its all there fault from the player, coaches, AD, pres os the school to the cocky fans. It's time to put your big boy pants on and say we made a mistake and it will not happen again.
Thanks for listing feel free to add something if you would like.

  23. Jer89,

If you're looking for somebody to stand up and say "We screwed up" you're dreaming. Let's face it......if they had just self reported the Tats and kept the kids out for a game or two we wouldn't be here. Winning became more important than accountability. As good a football coach as Tress was he failed these kids on a life lesson. I've heard the odd Buckeye Fan on their blog stepping up and saying that their program was obviously flawed. They tell other Buckeye fans to step up, admit it, fix it and move on and they are often criticized for their point of view. Anybody in Columbus who doesn't support Tress or blows a whistle gets drummed out of town and are no longer considered true Buckeyes. Go over to "247 Ohio State" and read some of the boards. GO BLUE

  24. TomVH on Twitter re: Wayne Morgan

"Just got a text from Wayne that said he probably is going to hold off on the announcement. We'll see what happens, if he decides to do it tomorrow or wait. I'll keep you updated."

    ReplyDelete
  25. Are you kidding me. Is someone else making a stong push for him in the last minute?

    ReplyDelete
  26. No his coaches want him to hold off. These coaches are meddling because they want exposure for their schools. They can say all they want about making sure he is making the right decision but in all honesty they are looking out for their program. Same thing is now happening with Diamond per Scout. He is now pushing his timeline back saying there is no leader again and that he wants to get more exposure for his teammates. This is getting stupid with these high school coaches.

  27. Standifer is committing to Michigan tonight according to TomVh Twitter!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Standifer commits according to MGoBlog!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOL I fully expected this you dont bring your whole family just for a normal visit

    ReplyDelete
  30. Now that Standfier has committed, do you think Morgan will also? He has to know there is only one possible spot left for DB'S

    ReplyDelete
  31. Morgan better commit before he loses his spot.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Jeffrey

He might commit but not tomorrow unless he really wants to commit to Michigan... I think his coaches want to talk him into going elsewhere

    ReplyDelete
  33. If Morgan does decides to go elsewhere,do you see any other prospects other than Reeves?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Here is where my confusion comes in. Everyone is convinced that Morgan is the silent commit. If this is the case, would we have all this doubt and wavering?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nah, it's basically a two horse race now for the last spot unless Hoke wants 5 DBs seeing as we don't know the exact number or breakdown of this class. Morgan better figure out what he wants quick. What a great position for Michigan to be in. I'm so excited. When Magnuson commits later this month, you'll start to see the OL spots fill up next.

    ReplyDelete
  36. TomVH has said that there is a silent commit besides Morgan.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Silent commit is a Olineman

    ReplyDelete
  38. Probably Magnuson then.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Is the o-line silent also a non-midwesterner?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ok, now I am really confused. Someone straighten me out. We apparently have two silent commits?

    Silent Commit #1: Defense, Non-Midwest
    Silent Commit #2: O-line, Non-Midwest

Also, any guesses on who these two guys are?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love the fact that these kids want to be here!

    ReplyDelete
  42. If Morgan going to let his coach talk him out of where he goes to school. Michigan may not be the school for him we need strong minded kids.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Personally, I would be OK even if we don't get morgan or reeves. We are in on so many Dlineman, I would rather take those guys. We have Countess and Ramon Taylor from last years class plus hollowell (cass tech pipeline), to go with T rich, Gant, Stanford, to go with marvin robinson, furman, avery, talbott etc from the RR days. We need the trenches much more than another DB in my opinion. Morgan and Reeves are great, but Pipkins/Day etc are great too. I would much rather take an excess DL than a CB. I can't think of too many Dlineman after jibreel black and richard ash who are supposed to be everydown guys? Last years class had ZERO DTackles

    ReplyDelete
  44. Looks like I was right about this

    ReplyDelete
  45. Now THAT'S how you silent commit! Fake everybody out. :o) Welcome to Michigan young man.

  47. @Michael. What are you talking about silent commit for. Standifer is from the midwest. Or are u just really giving whoever it is a hand for keeping it such a secret.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @ Richard... I think you might be on to something. I think the reason Morgan is pushing back his announcement is because he needs to find another school. I think Hoke has informed him that the spots are full, and in order to somewhat save face, he's come out with this most recent comment.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm not saying he was ever a silent commit, I think silent committing is dumb because everybody knows who they are anyways. With Standifer we all thought he was a lock, then he was delaying his decision, then he was visiting 4 other schools, then at dinnertime on a Wednesday BOOM! This is the better alternative to being one of our 2 other silent commits.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @brandon. So I should repost that then. I deleted it when @Michael started making me think he thought the silent was standifer.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Is there any chance that reeves is the silent. Leaving Morgan in the cold.

    ReplyDelete
  52. To be honest, I don't even pay any attention to these "silent" commits. I have a pretty jaded viewpoint of these scenarios. Either you're a Michigan Man, or you're NOT. I don't care about the jockeying that goes on in order to get teammates more exposure. I tend to focus more on the kids that know what they want, or at least the kids that have the character to stand up and say "These are the schools that I'm considering".

    ReplyDelete
  53. I dont think Hoke would mind adding Reeves and Morgan ..You dont turn down great talent like that... What you do is look at other spots and take 1 less body at the position ..Maybe not take a 3* QB or not take a RB positions we really dont need ... We need to get faster on defense so we take em IMO

    ReplyDelete
  54. Just reported that Reeves has PSU ahead of us slightly because they will let him play Offense and Defense

    ReplyDelete
  55. Once Michigan gets there 3rd.Oline commit how fast will the other Olinemen commit? Should be fast.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Just saw Pryor has been driving on a suspended Lic.

    ReplyDelete
  57. That old news. His was busted while driving on a suspended license back in February. Fk Pryor.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think Morgan still likes and wants Michigan. Hoke will for sure take a 4th. Just getting bad advice from his coaches. He's a kid listening to people that he trusts. Only one seat left on the bus!!!! UMFAN323. I agree.....I think we can miss out on a QB this year but only if it's for a rock star, otherwise grab a QB just to be safe.

    ReplyDelete
  59. do u think morgan is holding off because, they let him know that standifer was committing?

    ReplyDelete
  60. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  61. With one DB spot left....why hold off. Just bad coaching advice. Only one guaranteed seat left in the life boat for DBs.

    ReplyDelete
  62. TomVH reporting that Standifer had a teammate with him: 2013 WR Laquon Treadwell....apparently he really enjoyed the trip. Anybody know this kid.
We got no WR in 2011 and have yet to pick one up this year too. Is this a little disconcerting to anybody else??

    ReplyDelete
  63. 14 Commits!!!!

    June 1st, 2010
    4 commits
    3 star DE Chris Rock
    3 star CB Greg Brown
    4 Star DB Brennen Beyer
    3 star CB Delonte Hollowell

What a difference a year makes!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hey guys, new to the blog. First off, thanks Benji and everyone for sharing all the info. Second, do you think the reason (besides depth)we are taking so many of the same group positions like TE's linemen and LB's are because they are so versatile. I mean if you think about it, after a couple more o-lineman and another DB, we will have almost everthing except the skill positions locked for a complete class.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hoke has said in the past that if you take a few RB's (I think that was an example) that they are the best athletes and can move to wherever there's a need. I think that holds true for TE's and LB's as well. I imagine it was more luck and recruits following recruiting as to why they all signed up in pairs at the same positions at the beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Standifer Commits!

    ReplyDelete
  67. does anyone have an idea of what kind of athlete standifer at CB? ND ppl on the MB at rivals try to say hes not a good athlete, nothing Ive seen has suggested that, but one guy even went so far as to say he would eventually move to OLB. Obviously this is a major exaggeration but would he be better off at FS and Morgan at CB assuming he commits?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Standifer is a good corner.....have a look at his tape. I originally wanted #1 Richardson, #2 Reeves, #3 Standifer and #4 Morgan as our DBs. It sounds like sour grapes. He was supposed to visit on 02 June but committed to us instead.....they seemed to like him yesterday!! We now have Richardson, Standifer and Gant....room for one more.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Standifer is underrated. He just made Tom Lemming's Top 100 List for 2012. He'll probably get a 4th star eventually. He hasn't been scouted that much and doesn't have many offers from big schools. Michigan I believe was the first to offer him. He's a bit of a diamond in the rough but not short on talent. If he moves to any other position it'll be Safety. He doesn't weigh enough to be a LB. Michigan has a bunch of DBs now in these past two recruit classes, and you may see a couple shift from CB to S. Those Notre Dame jerkoffs are just jealous.
