Commitment Profile: Jehu Chesson

Name: Jehu Chesson

Location: Ladue, MO

Position: WR

Ratings: ESPN – 3* (79), Scout – 3*, 247 Sports - 3*

Recruitment: Chesson was a Michigan visitor in summer and came away impressed, but we didn’t hear too much about him until his official visit to UM for the Ohio State game. He was rumoured to be very high on Michigan after that game, but kept his word to visit Iowa a couple weeks later. The Hawkeyes visit was good, but not good enough to leapfrog UM, so he committed to the Wolverines a few days later. Northwestern was also in the final three.

Offers: Michigan, Iowa, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Illinois, Missouri, UCLA, plus non BCS offers.

Stats: Currently stands at 6’2.5 and around 180lbs, with no reported 40 yard dash time (he’s probably a 4.4 – 4.5 guy). As a junior he racked up 605 yard receiving with 11 TDs. (Snr year stats to follow)

ESPN Analysis: Chesson has good size to go along with some surprising strength and decent speed. Can play either slot or wideout, and gets off the LOS and into his routes quickly and smoothly. He can be a vertical threat with his speed and height, but we’re not convinced he has elite speed to burn the better corners at the college level.
One of his best assets is his ability to adjust to the ball and make spectacular grabs. He can really bail out a QB if the throw is off target, often making acrobatic catches in traffic. He needs to improve his intermediate routes, but does well on option routes against zone coverage.
Overall is a good BCS caliber prospect who could develop into a top receiver given his upside (height, decent speed, good hands).

Improvements: Route running is something to be worked on, as he apparently drifts on hitches and curls.

Film Highlights: Link here.

Final Thoughts: With Chesson’s commitment, Michigan now has their two wide receivers for this class; and both are guys that might not have elite ratings, but both posses good upside. For those who are moaning about why we don’t get elite WR prospects, just remember that Justin Blackmon came to OKST a similar size to both our current commit, AND he was rated lower! Just something to keep in mind!

At Michigan, Chesson will certainly get his chance to play early because Michigan lacks WR depth, and it’s a relatively easy position to play as a freshman, as long as you know how to block!

As for the rest of the class, this won’t have a great effect, because we’ve forecasted this for a while now, and so to have the Michigan coaches (I’m guessing?). It does mean that Monty Madaris won’t visit though. UM shouldn’t take another WR unless Dorial Green Beckham comes calling, and the odds of that happening are 0.000000000000000000001%

  2. He puts me in mind and frame of Cunningham from MSU!!!!!

  3. I guess Stefon Diggs was never a real possibility?

  4. An incredible addition of a very talented WR to this strong recruiting class. A Braylon Edwards type in the making.

  5. three star, four star means nothing. i like the way he plays. that is all that counts. it is all about taking it to the next level. he can do it with what michigan has to teach him.

  6. Our future is looking great. Chesson is a stud.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ok, I've been following recruiting since 1975 very closely and fathom myself having scouting abilities, with that being said.

Who the hell gets the kingly title of awarding stars to guys? This is becoming a stupid game with who shows up to what camps and who sucked up to somebody.

1st off, Chesson looks really impressive to me, great hands and catches the ball with them, not his body, I love that in a WR. Great speed and burst after catching the ball.

Darboh's film was hard to follow but he looks like he's got great speed and blocks well, goes over the middle without fear.

I think both guys can be studs with the facilities and coaching they will get in AA. I believe we got 2 guys that could be Braylon and Adrian Arrington type WR's.

    I'm happy

    ReplyDelete
  8. I see that Cunningham and Edwards have been mentioned above. Marvin McNutt is another example of a three-star recruit, with size, turning into a very productive receiver. McNutt even committed as a QB. All three of those guys were around the exact size that Chesson is right now. A tandem of Darboh and Chesson could be great, with both guys being big receivers that are quick.

I think things with Diggs cooled down considerably once some of our guys came to visit him and he had already left for an OV at Cal. He also seemed somewhat intimidated by Michigan's academics in an article I read a while ago. As far as I know, he never ruled out Michigan and still talked about a possible visit. I'm sure we wouldn't turn him down now, but this makes it seem pretty much impossible. Very happy to have Jehu at Michigan. Go Blue!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Diggs still wanted to visit, Michigan would certainly make room for him, just like if both Garnett AND Banner wanted to commit. I think Hoke is smart enough to accept talent regardless if it still qualifies as a NEED for this class or not. Diggs would probably be the most ready to come in and contribute immediately of all the WR's. I too am excited for Darboh and Chesson.

  10. Good point by Jimmy an bengi! If jehu is rated higher then Blackmon or McNutt then we got a great prospect. Who wouldn't want either of the two listed above! Lets just hope the kid has the same drive they do, if he does I am sure he will be a star at Michigan!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I really hope these 2 kids pan out...they seem to have a lot of potential.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The Star thing is just something for people to guestimate about. Its a system that gets hype going and so forth. I think its similar to watchin Mel Kiper on draft day.. CERTAINLY we all know that not every player that gets drafted when Mel thinks they should, perform well. That being said I agree with all the comments on trusting in the staff and allowing them to evaluate the talent at hand. Also I would point out that these recievers are BIG boys.. BIG KIDS that not only can catch, but im assuming add a few pounds and block for this punishing run game we are going to have. Also will be interesting to see if Meyer gets smaller faster corners from down south at TSiO. This could work wonders for us in terms of mismatches in the future.
You cant teach Size and speed, but you can teach technique. I think these guys will work out well in what I can only guess is gearing up to be a "punch you in the face" type of offense.

I am really interested to see if we can land Garnett or another high level O-lineman. Plus we offered Tuley-Tillman too? 2013 recruit, that kid is a MONSTER.... you get him and Isaac, and look the heck out. We are going to straight up run some people over.

    Montee Ball - 3 stars
    Andrew Luck - 5 stars
    Tyrann Mathieu - 3 stars
    Trent Richardson - 5 stars
    Robert Griffin - 4 stars

So 3,4,5 stars doesn't mean a difference when they actually play the game

  15. Anyone hear anything about Evan Boehm, one of the top centers this year. I saw a story that he has opened up his recruitment (from Missouri), and is looking at UM along with a few other schools. It also said that Pipikins, also being from Missouri, was going to get in his ear. This was a Bleacher Report story, so I don't know how trustworthy it is...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I read something about Evan Boehm also, I don't recall where though. I did read he is interested in Michigan, but not how much.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Evan Boehm just recommited to Missouri

  25. Another thing i read about last night was that a pair of ND commits both from Fresno, CA (5 star CB Tee Shepard and 4 star WR Deontay Greenbery) visited USC last weekend together.

If they both decommit from ND then expect ND to go after Yuri Wright and Armani Reeves hard. Right now i think we have a slight advantage because ND already has 2 stud CB's in this year's class, but if the two kids from Fresno decommit then I see Notre Dame getting either Reeves or Wright.

I could also see Jordan Payton jump on board with ND if they decommit. Notre Dame already has 3 WR in their class this year so that might be discouraging for Payton right now.

  26. Man some OSU fan is talking crap at Magnuson, and garnet on twitter....can they make it any easier to land josh? Lol

and in response he said "i got ur blindside"

    ReplyDelete
  28. Boehm has reaffirmed to Missouri, so he's now off the table. It looks like Logan Tuley-Tillman has Michigan as his number one and we should be able to land him. We just need Garnett for the interior and we'll easily have the best O-line in the nation for the coming years. Man, if we could get Ty Isaac behind that O-line then it would very awesome. I'd like to see a few flashy DEs stop that.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love it... really I do... A generation of buckeye hatred. These kids are already fired up... Its going to be EPIC!... And if we get both Garnett and Tillman? man... MONSTERS.

  31. Hey guys new to the blog. One of the proud and faithful wolveriens living down in columbus! Came across the blog and am sooooo glad i have some people to talk with im so use to having my guard up and arguing with these dumb ass fans down here. I may get some crap for this, but i go to osu( i know i know) but i got a big financial break going there. But i do wear my wolverine t when i hit them gym down there! you cant imagine the look and comments that come my way, but im always cocked n loaded n fire back!

Anyway love what brady n co are doing, havent been this excited for sometime. Chesson looks solid despite the rating. Big and looked pretty physical from what the film showed. And like a lot of you already said stars dont mean to much. Its a guesstamation. Although i dont know the level of comp he is playing with. There are a ton of 5* guys that are just ok and you never hear about. He shows flashes and has an upside

GOOOO BLUE!!! Till i DIE (From behind enemy lines)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think so too, earlier, Pipkins was asking who we needed to go after.. Somebody had mentioned Garnett, and he tweeted...
"I wouldnt worry about Josh ;)"

    ReplyDelete
  33. I really hope we snag Garnett. The man pancakes every play. It is amazing to watch. By the looks of his Twitter, he is always all about Michigan.

I would love to see Yuri also. The man just looks like an athlete on the field. Just natural abilities. We almost forgot we have the best defensive setup, in reference to the coaches, in the nation. Yuri has size and skills, just can't wait to see them get better.

I think the final couple will be a surprise maybe good ol' signing day surprise. Hopefully Diggs or someone at his caliber.

May Maize n' Blue be with you all,
    Shane P out

    ReplyDelete
  34. So now that we are down to about a month and half from NSD. Who does everyone think the final 4 will be and why?
My predictions in no paticular order:
Garnett: called Magnuson his boo and says he hates ohio and how he conducts himself on twitter
Wright: The lure of playing for Mattison
Brown: he realized UM is the better fit for him
Grant: Kyle Kalis get him to commit

    ReplyDelete
  35. If we don't get Garnett I'm gonna be pissed, this guy is showing all the signs of being a wolverine. All 3 schools are great but Michigan is the better football school, which should be a no brainer but you never know.

    ReplyDelete
  36. what poistion will michigan gonna be recruiting the most for the 2013 class?

  39. @zach...
Little known fact...michigan is the 15th ranked university in the world at quality of education. So if you compare academics we are actually way ahead. Football maybe the only area we don't blow away the competition.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Garnett has said academics are huge for him so ND or Stanford might hold the edge. He wants to be a trauma surgeon

    ReplyDelete
  41. @michiganman1975
If this kid thinks about it down the road, Luck will be gone and stanford won't be anything great and ND will be alright ill give them that but Michigan has the most promise then the rest of them. We have one of the greatest staffs in college football and I dont think any of them will go anywhere, he have everything set in the right direction. But its only special with kids who want to part of it all the way no wishy washy kind of kids.

    ReplyDelete
  42. A degree from ND, Stanford, or UM can get you into the best institutions as a trauma surgeon. The academics are pretty much equal. The only real decision is if Garnett wants to go to a private university (ND or Stanford). On field, Michigan is the leader. Obviously, his good friend will be at Michigan too. It's just a question of if he finds being at a private university significantly more appealing than Michigan. I think you can discount location because Stanford is still several hundred miles away from where he is in Washington. So, we're not dealing with a recruit that is worried about staying close to home. I think Michigan is at the top when weighing the factors. Too hard to predict these things, though.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I believe Stanford just added an offensive tackle to their class - a 4* kid, can't think of the name. Does anyone know how many Kline recruits they have? Maybe this eliminates them from the competition for Garnett?

    ReplyDelete
  44. @paulie & Zach...
If you pay attention to garnett's twitter you will realize his committing to Michigan is merely a formality...the kid is coming to the big house. I think he will put it on paper on NSD.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @jimmy
All true...they all have great academics. A bias person like you or I would say Michigan is got more promise then Stanford or ND, but he is coming from the west coast. I would say ND would probably look very similar to a kid from Washington. Really doesn't matter though because we got this kid....you heard it here first! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lets all take a moment to thank all the mindless toons down in Ohio who are on twitter talking crap to these kids... they are only helping us in the recruiting process. keep it up boys!

I mean do they realize what they are doing?

    ReplyDelete
  47. C-Note,
Please keep in mind UM has fans in Ohio as well.

    When is Garnett announcing?

    ReplyDelete
  48. There are too many of us Michigan fan's all over their twitter pages too though. I see crosier something all over the kids twitters. He's a Michigan fan and he's gotta leave them alone. So if your on twitter, try not to comment on these kids pages, or tweet these guys, they dont want to talk to us..

    ReplyDelete
  49. In his last news conference, Brady Hoke said we would have 2-3 early enrollees. I think Ringer is one. Does anyone know who the other candidates are? Does this also open up more space in this class if the coaching staff wanted? I think it does. Lastly, if there is more space should we roll the dice on Demar Dorcey? He's a supreme talent, seems to have straightened out his life, and really wants to go Blue.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @ Paulie I think the other two is Bolden & Wilson. The three early enrollees allow us to be able to take 28 candidates this year allowing us to hopefully get
    Garnett
    Wright
    Reeves
    Grant

I have heard Dorcey's best bet would be to try to become a walk-on, I agree he is a amazing talent and I hope he lives out his dream of playing for Michigan.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I believe Bolden is enrolling early too.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ok I have been reading this blog for a long time and now after being called out and never posting I will. I am crosier2432 on twitter. I talk to recruits. I have never once had a kid not reply back in a negative way. For you to say kids dont want to talk to us you are crazy. If they didnt do u you think they would reply? Unless you are a recruit that I talk to and you dont want me to shut up. Being a closet stalker makes you better than one who actually says something? Oh by the way this is a free country. Thanks.

Now on to recruiting, I agree I think Garnett will be blue. I think Reeves is waiting for the visit to switch. I think were slow playing Grant a bit to see what else is around. Wright is my wild card he seems to like us but until a visit comes around and a reaction is stated he is ND bound. I hope he is blue.

    ReplyDelete
  53. That awkward moment when the guy you are talking shit about happens to Be on the same blog...

    ReplyDelete
  54. @ Jer89 Well if your a buckeye fan in OHIO your a toon. All ya have to do is show your maize and blue card and your good. =)

    ReplyDelete
  55. C-Note,
Things are all good. Its just not fair to call all Ohioans toons. It is fair to call OSU fans toons.

Can't wait for the sugar bowl.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So the dead period means coaches can't recruit but the kids can still give their verbals during that time frame right?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I know Jer... I lived there as a kid for a year. Powell OH, went to Olentangy schools. Longest year of my life. Even tho I was just in 4th grade. I went back a few years ago and all the farms were gone... It was all grown up.

    ReplyDelete
  58. honestly i believe Joe Bolden has the best shot to be a starter next year, he moves so well, hard nose hitter, high football IQ. I believe michigan will have to go to a 3-4 look eventually, they have all these amazing lbs, they need to utilize them some how. I can see us competing for a national title every year soon. I might be exaggerating it by a little but there is so much promise for this program.

    ReplyDelete
  59. @drock the dead period means that coaches cannot make in-house visits to recruits. However, they can still call them and yes kids can still give a verbal commit to a school during the "dead period" also.

    ReplyDelete
  60. @zach

Mattison has mentioned moving to a 3-4 down the road, I think we are seeing that in a small dose right now with recruiting. Notice, some of the first 2012 recruits we took were our 4 beasts at LB Stone, Ross, Bolden, Ringer. Notice that although we are losing big contributors at the Dtackle, and nobody here is super thrilled at our depth at Dtackle, we aren't going super hard into getting multiple D tackles. We have two, and I don't really think they are pursuing anyone else. We have a 2 DT, 3 DE and 4 LB, sounds like a 3-4 class to me.

    ReplyDelete
  61. You guys need to remember how we get a lot of our de's we build up lb's and make them de's...then we build up de's and make them dt's....we aren't in the Rodriguez era anymore. Remember Lamar Woodley? Stud de..played lb for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  62. @lalondtm especially that one of the dts we have is 320 pounds, our defense will be crazy good, like 90s good. Can't wait to see these kids play.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ohio state fans are just talking shit to all these kids on twitter, find something other to do except talk shit to these kids, I love class Ohio has to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Let the Ohio State fans talk all the shit they want to the kids, it will just make them even more hungry and want to beat ohio even more. Plus it will make Garnett come to Michigan even more, so Magnuson, Garnett, Pipkins and the rest of the class can shut up these Ohio State fans on the field when beat Ohio.

Also, I am hoping that Alabama beats LSU, It will make it a whole lot sweeter when we beat bama next year.

    This is Michigan fergodsakes.....Go Blue

    ReplyDelete
  65. I think Payton comments today! Or before New Years to us. I follow but don't comment on his twitter and he is acting weird in a good way... Either that or he is pulling a Pryor getting our hopes up! Lol but I'd be happy getting another weapon. Finish off year with Wright, Garnett, Payton and another O-line. With Demar Dorsey walking on. I think Demar starts by big ten conference play next year! GM can teach the mechanics, you can't teach 4.2 speed and natural draw to the ball like Kovacs has. Floyd, Avery, Countless, Kovacs and Dorsey! Good luck qb's!

  74. I think we could take another receiver. Payton maybe the guy. I would say no way by the end of the year though. We would rather have reeves then Payton..so if reeves don't come then Payton may. Really for me I would be thrilled with either. I can really say this class is really starting to come down to the nitty gritty...if we don't land certain guys we may not fill it...which wouldn't be too bad it would open scholarships for next year which I think would be huge.

I say we go all in on:
    Yuri Wright
    Josh Garnett or Diamond
    Reeves...or Payton
    Grant...he could be a homerun

If we can't get these guys then don't take anyone...because the scholarship would probably be better used next year.....we have already met all of our needs for this year any way.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The rumor is Nathan Brink broke his leg.
The last four spots should finish quite similar to what Michiganman 1975 listed.
I don't know about taking another receiver because the spot is quite full now and DeAnthony Arnett could still transfer here. I think Michigan will be able to land Grant, Reeves, Wright, and Garnett and they will have a top three class on all sites except Espn.
