DeAnthony Arnett Update

The news has broke, and it looks like there is major problem with any potential Arnett to Michigan talks; Derek Dooley and Tennessee won't let him join a BCS team in the state of Michigan, which is beyond a joke really.

His father is seriously ill, so he should be close to him. Why not let him be close to his father as well as allowing him to live out his potential at a decent football school? Its completely unfair because Arnett cannot afford to pay his own way at UM or MSU, so unless Tennessee changes their tune, he'll have to play for Western/Eastern/Central Michigan, I think?

We're not even playing Tennessee in the future, and seen as we're good and they're...not good, we're unlikely to meet them in a bowl in the next 3-4 years. In these circumstances, he should be allowed to transfer to any school.

  1. Dooley is getting hammered on all the Blogs and rightfully so. He has his priorities all screwed up.

I suspect more than a few recruits may reconsider. These kids aren't stupid. It comes across very self serving.

Add Dooley to the list of the soon to be unemployed.

  2. This is just stupid why doesn't the NCAA step in and assist this kid and help him. If he wants to play at a school closer to home so he can be near his father then they should do the right thing, be it at MSU or BLUE This not a situation of a kid transfering just to transfer, Tennessee should be made to make the right call here, even if they can't see what that is.

  3. That'just the coach being a dick I hope o'brien realizes what kind of school and coaching staff they are and switches to another sec school or michigan would be ok to

  6. After sleeping on this I have come to the same conclusion as Mort. Tenn will eventually allow his release whether it be for the sake of their play (which I would hope) or for their own image.

    ReplyDelete
  7. if they donot let him play in michigan. i am sure lots of recruits will look at this and say screw them.

  8. ND lost! that's good for us...kinda

  9. I wonder who the Quarterback is going to be? they lost out on Kiel, and both Ree's and that other guy are a walking dumpster fire. They do have a good Defense tho and Teo is a beast. But seriously.. if your a wideout, who is going to get you the rock?

  10. Can anyone tell me the last football player that has ever tranfered to Michigan after starting somewhere else???

    ReplyDelete
  11. i read in espn it is a school policy. that any team that they recruit against is a no no. what a bunch of bull. we let mallet go. we let tate go. i guess if i had a son i would not let him go to tenn. this policy sucks as a big time school. laughing matter but not for the kid.

  12. Per Rivals, UM is trying to get a visit from DB Kenneth Crawley - a soft commit to Tenn. Perhaps some aftermath from this BS decision by Tenn.

  13. @northermi

Steven Threet from GT and Marell Evans, but Evans was a different case.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It is interesting that with all the transfers BLUE has had over the past four years not a single one was released with parameters. All of the students were allowed to go where they wanted. Even Kellen Jones was released and allowed to play at this year at OU only months after signing his LOI to Michigan.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The media knows and its smart on arnett's part for getting the story out, ten will have no choice but to let him go or he will repeal and the NCAA will let him anyways, with Devin Gardner being basically best friends there's a good chance he goes blue

  16. we should get the web site and write to the ad at tenn.

    Dr. Martin

I recently read an article about this young man’s wish to play football closer to his father, whom has considerable health issues. As I understand the situation, your football coach and the University of Tennessee put conditions on his transfer which I find reprehensible and shows a complete lack of integrity and empathy for his situation.

Since scholarships are only one year commitments from a program, I think Tennessee should follow the lead of other reputable universities and let the kid move on without conditions. If the transfer were to an SEC school, I could understand. This is shameful.

For the record, I did not attend the University of Michigan or Michigan State University. I just found the situation so outrageous that I had to remind an official at your university of its horrible behavior. Congratulations on being a second rate college without class. At least you can commend your football coach on another mediocre season…and more to come with this bush league attitude.

  23. this is common place.

Brandon Warren wasn't released by FSU. Sat out.

Alex Bullard wasn't released by ND. Paid his own way for a year.

    Both had sick parents.

Jerrod Williams at Clemson wasn't released. Paid his own way for a year.

    ReplyDelete
  24. JRA you are so so so right.way too go big time

    ReplyDelete
  25. Here is what is being lost because you are all furious that someone is blocking a player to come to Michigan. Arnett has only fulfilled 6 months of his 1 year NLOI. If he fulfilled the full year he could transfer, sit out a year, and play wherever he wanted. If he wins the NCAA waiver then he can play without sitting a year.

This is not different than everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Justine, why do you have to be such a drag? You are bumming me out big time.

Cute photo and I like the name Justine however, okay I'll cut you some slack.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I wont cut anyone slack. Its deplorable no matter how you look at it. And if you read above you, most of the people on here have stated that it didnt matter if he came to Michigan or not. It was the situation that upset them. And I agree. If he wanted to go to MSU, I would still be calling Dooley a clown.

    ReplyDelete
  28. National Letters of intent are signed on Feb 1st correct? So by my math he has 2 months to go? or is there some error in my thinking here?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Also, Jerrods transfer was within the ACC... Va Tech rival school... Alex Bullard was To TN correct? wow you would think they would have a understanding.. and Brandon Warren was to TN as well.. wow.. real nice.. consider that the SEC and ACC meet up more then they do with the big ten and you can see why maybe... But I still think that the three you listed were hosed as well if it was family related.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I guess what Im getting at is this is a college problem(if you believe its a problem) not a specific coach problem. Not sure on the dates C-Note. I believe its one full year of school. ie: 2 semesters

    ReplyDelete
  31. Alex Bullard came from Notre Dame btw, not the ACC.

I do know most FSU fans believed Brandon Warren was using his mom as an excuse to get back home as well which seems to be the general feeling about Arnett around here.

But if his dad is that sick I dont see going to JUCO for 1 year and heading to Michigan or Michigan State after that as a huge problem. That gives you a good year to take care of your dad and slow down and focus on which school you want to go to. I believe Arnett committed to every school in Michigan at some point during his recruitment.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I also sent this to Dave Hart, the athletic director via the UT athletic department website.

I normally don't have the time to blog, but it is a slow day at the office. More importantly,UT deserves all the backlash that comes their way.

    ReplyDelete
  33. There is a glaring problem with your letter JRA.

"Since scholarships are only one year commitments from a program, I think Tennessee should follow the lead of other reputable universities and let the kid move on without conditions"

He's been in school for 6 months. He hasn't given his year.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Technically you are right, but he could have completed his year academically and them moved on. Besides, he did give them a full football season and that is all the SEC really cares about. Nonetheless and no matter how you slice it, they treated him very poorly.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think they were brutally honest with Dee and his family. Dooley personally went to their house in Saginaw a few weeks ago in person. Dooley is a very firm believer in what a commitment means. Most people around Arnett believe he feels like a fish out of water in Knoxville and when Charlie Baggett retired he lost the one calming effect he had with him. His father has never played a role in his life and there is a 20 minute documentary on Dee Arnett where his father isn't mentioned one time. He's using his father as an excuse to get a free ticket out of his situation. At least thats what we believe is going on.

We all know there is more than 1 side to a story and we have only heard 1 side. Dee still has the opportunity to go to Mich St. or UM. He just has to take a more difficult route.

Is Dee going to demand to only play for the Detroit Lions if he makes it to the NFL?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Arnett had his chance to choose Michigan. Instead he decided to go to Tennessee, so F*** him. Everybody makes bad decisions, but nobody wants to face the consequences of those poor decisions. However, I do wish his father the best and hope he gets well.

  39. When you say "we" I can only assume you to be a Volunteer, so I will be BRUTALLY honest with you. You believe those thoughts because he is trying to get away? and you feel he has screwed your program by leaving yes? Because a coach who has played a huge role in his career thus far has left, and now he cannot go on without him because he is uncomfortable in Knoxville?
Yes, Saginaw is NOTHING like Knoxville... in fact I have family in Blaine, and ill tell you its like the Surface of Mars compared to Sagnasty.
That being said, you may very well be correct, that IS plausible however unless you know them personally I dont feel you can comment on his emotional connection to his father... No matter how many documentaries you have watched or interviews. Its still his father, and for some people it doesnt matter what happened before in some cases. When death becomes involved you can throw it all out the window.
Your NFL analogy is absurd by the way. These are college kids not paid professionals.

TN would do well to keep that in mind, yes he signed a commitment... But they do not OWN him.

Big Ten schools like Michigan have no issues letting these kids transfer. I believe though his name escapes me that we had an Olineman we let transfer to OSU after we hired RR? McGuffie? Mallett? Stephen Threet? just to name a few. A DB to Pitt or PSU?

My point is it highlights a bigger picture, and not just the fact that your Headcoach looks like a jackwaggon now. Its the fact that it will again bring to light the ridiculous practices of the SEC. Overfilling scholarships and now the denial of transfers to other BCS conferences.
I feel bad for the kid whether he comes here or not. He choose poorly and got stuck it looks like. To your point on the JUCO thing, its a statistical nightmare sometimes to make it back from JUCO.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @C-Note

I'm right there with you, put the rules aside, this is more than a just some player wanting to transfer because he can do better elsewhere, or doesn't get along with the coach (although I would assume they aren't best friends at this point).

Justin Boren is the player you were thinking of C-Note, in 2009 he transferred from Michigan to THEosu, our most hated rival. Is MSU or Michigan a rival of Tennessee? Do they even play each other in the foreseeable future? Nope.

    @justine
Defend Dooley if you want to, but you know from a moral standpoint, this is wrong. I don't care if he "hasn't been there a full school year" or whatever you are trying to argue, the point is, the man's father is dying and he wants to be with him. You want to throw crazy analogies around about the NFL, he's a crazy analogy for you. If you accepted a scholarship to Tennessee to swim in a pool, and your dad was dying back home in Michigan, what would you do?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Okay, long time lurker here. I want to thank Justine for her legalistic representation of the odious nature of college sports (mixed with some Doctor Phil - or perhaps she's some sort of soothsayer who can really see into all of our hearts and apply the tough love). Her callous inhumanity has actually propelled me to comment on this shitty situation.

It does not matter if Arnett is being honest or if he is trying to scam the system (I believe it is the former, but once again, who cares). What matters is that college sports is set up to indenture its athletes and that the University of Tennessee is institutionally in favor of this setup. They have decided to justify their behavior by blaming Mr. Arnett instead of just agreeing to let everyone walk away. The acribing of ulterior motives to Mr. Arnett is an attempt to dehumanize him and speaks pretty badly about the landed gentry attitudes towards its servants that Tennessee is showing.

It is complete and utter bullshit that the NCAA let's this ongoing facade continue. This has gone on for years and Mr. Arnett is just the latest victim in a system where colleges pay cheap for big time money makers (both in the immediate funding of sports teams for the university as well as long term as community outreach / marketing to the alumni). This is also a system where the professional teams (the NFL) are too damn cheap to create their own farm league system. This is a financial arrangement and the players should be rewarded more by this system by at least having more freedom to come and go. Why does Mr. Arnett only want to play at UM or MSU? Because his making the big money in the NFL (not out of the realm of possibility) is helped out by playing in a BCS school. Considering his family has money issues, his being concerned about both his father and his future career make sense.

BTW - not that it matters, Justine, but if Mr. Arnett just wants out of Tennessee because as you claim he does not fit there, why is the limitation only on BCS schools near his family?

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is just another perfect example, like OSU, of how a coach will put a football "win" ahead of what is the right thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have never understood the inequity of
    coaches breaking contracts and moving
when ever, but holing the athletes
to rules coaches make up as they go along.

    ReplyDelete
  44. PS Didn't Dooley just break his contract at La Tech too go to Tenn?

  45. I don't know about anyone else but i attend college and still had to look up like 5 words in the dictionary that David Bernstein used lol. Once i fully understood everything i must say, i completely agree lol.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well Bendy, I'm not in college anymore but love words and word origins. I didn't need a dictionary for any of the words Mr. Bernstein wrote, except for the word acribing, which turns out not to be a word, which made me feel smarter.

Anyway, I think the word he was trying to convey is "ascribing", must have been a typo on his part, you're welcome everybody, lmao.

    ReplyDelete
  50. My two cents on the Arnett situation. I really believe Arnett will be granted a waiver to go to the school of his choice. Either the NCAA will step in (I believe they are meeting next week about it) or Tennessee will cave after the media firestorm.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I really think we can play fine without Arnett...i say let Tennessee bury themselves on this guy. I would expect some of their current recruits to decommitt, and future kids to steer away from them. They don't have a good base of instate talent to choose from. With that in mind publicity like this could hang that program for years to come. The up and down play of teams in the sec is obvious. If they have programs with no upside it will eventually erode at the conference.

    ReplyDelete
  52. okay, i really hope michigan recruits berkley edwards, this kid is a great player. A bit undersized but you could of said that about mike hart and look what he did for us, big high school talent doesn't necessarily mean big time results at the next level.

  63. I am back from vacation and I already miss Michigan. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and will have a save New Year.

To me it does not matter where Arnett goes next year. The most important thing is the health of his dad. I hope he gets better. I am unaware of his health problems but I wish him well. UT should give him a unconditionally release just because of all the bad press they are getting. As for any decommits lile O'brien. I believe Hoke will not give him a second look. That ship has sailed.

When is Garnett deciding? I am ready to finish the OL recruitment.

I have to tell you I was thinking that a couple of O Linemen would decommit by now and was kind of hoping some would. But the more I see and read on these guys the more I like them. They may not be 5 star or have a big name. But they are working hard and I believe they are all Michigan. I hope the B1G is ready for what these guys are going to do to them.

  69. Litwild,
I agree with you. If Garnett does not go blue I would be shocked.

I read on 24/7 that UM has 3 guys visiting on the 13th. Wright, Diamond and Madaris. I will be shocked if Madaris still visits. I would love to get Wright out of this but I am getting a bad feeling about him. OSU has made a strong push for him. And speaking of OSU I feel thats where Diamond will commit too.

I have heard afew new nmes being thrown around in the last couple of weeks. Does anybody kow who and how good of a chance UM has with them?

    ReplyDelete
  70. i have a bad feeling about wright too and apparently the coaching staff does too as they are now pursuing reeves hard and a UTenn commit.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think Bars stays. They may move him to center.

    ReplyDelete
  72. he is listed at 6'5" and 6'6" across sites. That's a little tall to be a center and centers that tall seem to struggle with getting blown up by nose tackles due to pad level and strength. we will see i guess

I read on rivals.com recently that Wright grew up a Michigan fan so I highly doubt that he would ever go to Ohio. However, I have been wrong before. If he was such a big Michigan fan growing up why hasn't he committed yet. If it were me I would have committed as soon as they offered, no questions asked. As you said I do have a bad feeling about him but I still highly doubt he would go to Ohio.

    ReplyDelete
  74. jgrubbs,
I wouldn't look into JGarnett wearing a Michigan t-shirt too much. He has also shown up to different workouts in full Notre Dame and Stanford garb. Unlike yourself, and I would assume most of us on here, I would actually be surprised if Garnett picks Michigan (don't get me wrong, I hope he does pick UM). I read on rivals that he wants to go to a school with a good medical program. I asked a good friend of mine that went to ND and he told that they are not known for any type of medical school (whether undergrad or graduate). So you would think it would just be between Michigan and Stanford. I read that he has a twin sister that he is really close with and rumor is she wants to go somewhere with a good law school. Both Stanford and Michigan, obviously, fit what he and his sister are looking for but I looked up the rankings on both (which may or may not have an effect on Garnetts decision) and Stanford is ranked higher than Michigan as a medical and a law school. Also, I am getting the feeling that he wants to stick closer to home. Therefore, it looks like Stanford.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The reason he has not committed is because his high school does not let kids make visits until after the season is over. And sense they won the state champ. he got alate start. UM is pushing hard for Reeves no matter what happens with Wright. I get the feeling UM will be moving some player around at DBs. This is just a feeling. I would like to know more about this kid committed to UT.

Your right on Bars I forgot he was that tall. I do hope all of UM current commits stay committed.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I also read that Peat maybe going to Stanford. That may play into Garnetts choice. and Erik Magnuson is playing a big part in Garnetts recruitment. Stanford already has 3 commits from O linemen they may not have room for him.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Why is everybody thinking Yuri Wright might not go Blue??

    ReplyDelete
  78. bagoosen, you are right, reading more on Garnett, the Michigan shirt isn't a huge thing, in a later interview he had on Stanford stuff. I also think you are looking at the school ranking things a bit to closely. A medical degree from either Stanford or Michigan would get him a job. I'm hoping the Magnuson factor along with Michigan's better long term football potential does it. But he is a 17/18 year old kid, so who knows what he is thinking right now, he may not even know.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Well, Garnett didn't deny the rumors that Michigan is his leader. Then again, he hasn't had his OV to Stanford yet. I wonder where things stand with Wright, haven't heard any news from him in some time. I'm not sure we could land Wright and Reeves. We already have a great commit at CB in Richardson and Countess will only be a sophomore. It seems like we have a very solid shot with both. I'm feeling that Reeves will decide first and it will be UM. PSU seems to be striking out with every single potential coach that they offer. This is merely conjecture, though.

  82. Wow, so after everything with Arnett, now there are reports of Dooley insulting longtime Tennessee recruits because he "doesn't know if he wants them anymore, and that he is searching for better options at their positions." He went on to tell them that they should decommit and look elsewhere, even though they have both been longtime tennessee fans and commits. what a sad, classless joke this scumbag is turning out to be. He comes off ass way too arragant for what his team did this year. I can't wait to see him fail some more in the future

  84. @MICHFAN1974:

I think people are down on Yuri Wright because he said he is announcing at the Army AA game along with teammate Elijah Shumate. Most people think that Shumate is an ND lock. Yuri's last visit was to ND a few weeks ago and said that he may announce at the Army AA but will still take his last 2 OVs (Michigan and Georgia) after he commits. I think it would be surprising for Yuri to commit to Michigan without even taking an OV.

    ReplyDelete
  85. @Logan:

I also heard that Dooley is not letting Arnett transfer to ND, which is ironic because just a year ago ND let Alex Bullard transfer to Tennessee to be close to a sick/dying family member. Bullard is now one of their best Olinemen.

Archive Tennessee receiver DeAnthony Arnett, who has sought a release to a school closer to his ill father in Saginaw, Mich., has been told by coach Derek Dooley that he will be granted a transfer to Michigan State or Michigan, among others.

As a true freshman this season, Arnett had 24 catches for 242 yards and two touchdowns. He was one of the highest-rated prospects in Dooley's 2011 recruiting class and was ranked in the ESPNU150.

Arnett said in December that his father has had two heart attacks, dialysis and a series of surgeries.

"My decision to leave the University of Tennessee has nothing to do with football, coaches, players or anything related to the school," Arnett said by email Tuesday. "It is and will always remain solely based off of the importance of me keeping my beliefs and family first."

Arnett said last month that he was seeking a release to all schools in Michigan. However, he said, Tennessee would release him only to a Mid-American Conference school in Michigan, unless Arnett wanted to pay his own way to a Big Ten school. The Vols' stance caused an uproar among fans.

But on Tuesday, Arnett said "(Dooley's) decision to release me unconditionally comes as a sign of a compassionate and empathetic coach. I will never be able to express fully my appreciations and gratitude for his decision.

"All good things take time and work. UT has always surpassed the rest and I believe in due time they will be back to the No. 1 program in the SEC. If I did not have issues within my family, you could guarantee that I would continue to be a VOL."
